A Roman legion (Latin legio, from legere “to read” in the sense of: “to select”, “to choose”) was an independently operating large military unit in the Roman Empire, usually consisting of 3000 to 6000 soldiers of heavy infantry and a small detachment of legionary cavalry of about 120 men. The success of the Roman legions was due to their superior equipment, unified deployment in battle formations, intensive training and discipline in battle, as well as tactical flexibility. It was therefore a key factor in the expansion of the Roman Empire. In the heyday of the Roman Empire, around 25 to 30 legions were sufficient to secure the empire on three continents, which could be deployed quickly via marching routes and ships.
