The War of the Spanish Succession was a dynastic war of succession fought between 1701 and 1714 between the Habsburg and Bourbon dynasties over the succession of Charles II, the last Habsburg on the Spanish throne, and over the balance of power in Europe.

Louis XIV's France and the allies of the Hague Grand Alliance faced each other in the struggle for rule over Spain, its European neighboring countries and its extensive colonial empire.
