At the time of Napoleon, Bavaria was initially on the side of France and was able to achieve large territorial gains through secularisation and mediatisation. In 1806, Bavaria was elevated to a kingdom. By switching to the side of Napoleon's opponents in good time, Bavaria was able to retain a large part of its territorial gains as the victorious power at the Congress of Vienna in 1814.
