On 1 July 1941, the designer Willys Overland was commissioned to create a light, multi-purpose off-road vehicle that was easy to drive, maintain and repair. The Jeep, consisting of simple, necessary and sufficient elements, is born: a practically timeless vehicle with a true "character".

The Willys Jeep, officially designated as a truck, 1/2 tonne, 4x4, is the best known of all American vehicles of the Second World War. Originally intended as a command and reconnaissance vehicle, it became the most versatile of all vehicles. Because it could be armed with machine guns and tow small artillery pieces, the Jeep was indispensable to the Allied war effort.
