After the Normandy landings in June 1944, the Allies planned to invade German territory in order to end the war as quickly as possible. Operation “Market Garden”, planned by Bernard Montgomery, envisaged overcoming the German defenses by deploying British, American and Polish airborne troops. The paratroopers were to gain control of the bridges in Holland between Eindhoven and Arnhem in order to secure the lines of communication between the Allied troops and Germany. However, strong German resistance and the fact that the Allies were unable to cross the Rhine jeopardized the operation, which turned out to be a failure. The war dragged on and further months of fighting were required before the Allies invaded Germany. Hartenstein was the hub of activity during Operation Market Garden and was used as the headquarters of the British 1st Division.
