On December 16, 1944, the German army launched a major offensive through the densely wooded area of the Ardennes in Belgium, codenamed “Wacht am Rhein”. The city of Bastogne, a neuralgic hub for road communications and an important logistical center, was one of the main targets of the strategic plan. The Belgian city and its surrounding areas were encircled by German forces, isolating a large number of American troops within the pocket. They put up stubborn resistance for several days against the enemy's repeated attacks under adverse weather and environmental conditions. The resistance of the 101st US Airborne Division “Screaming Eagles” was legendary. On 26 December, the counter-offensive by several armored divisions of the Third Army under the command of General George Smith Patton ended the siege.
