The 82nd Airborne Division, called All American or America's Guard of Honor, is the first airborne division of the United States Army and the largest airborne unit in the world with about 14,000 soldiers. Part of the XVIII Airborne Corps since its formation in 1944, the division has been stationed at Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) in North Carolina since 1942 and is tasked with being ready for combat anywhere in the world within 18 hours of being alerted. During the Second World War, it distinguished itself in particular during the Normandy landings, Operation Market Garden, Operation Varsity and the Battle of the Bulge.
